A Private Evening at Carmel Modern for AIA & ASID Members
Thursday, July 9 | 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.Carmel Modern | Carmel-by-the-Sea

Before Carmel-by-the-Sea became celebrated for its storybook architecture, it was first a haven for artists.
Painters, poets, writers, and visionaries came seeking a place where creativity could flourish. Their ramshackle cottages, modest studios, and handcrafted homes were never intended to establish an architectural style. They were simply places to create. Yet from those humble beginnings emerged one of California's most distinctive communities, where art became a way of life and creativity shaped every corner of the village.
As Carmel evolved, architecture grew alongside that artistic spirit. Architects and designers embraced the village's scale, landscape, and sense of place, creating homes, galleries, gardens, and gathering spaces that honored its creative roots while allowing the community to continually evolve. Today, architecture and interior design remain essential to Carmel's identity, preserving its character while thoughtfully shaping its future.
This special evening, created exclusively for members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)Â and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), celebrates the professionals who continue that legacy. Together, architects and interior designers shape far more than buildings and interiors. They influence how we experience light, material, texture, proportion, and atmosphere, creating environments that inspire the people who live, work, and gather within them.
On Thursday, July 9, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., Carmel Modern welcomes AIA and ASID members for an intimate evening featuring an artist talk by internationally acclaimed painter Lucas Blok, a seasonal culinary experience by Chef Nance Danner of Pacific Coast Private Chefs, and exceptional wines from I. Brand & Family Wines. Together, these masters of their respective crafts offer an evening devoted to design, creativity, and the enduring artistic spirit that continues to define Carmel-by-the-Sea.
John Cromwell: Building Community Through Art
Hosting the evening is artist and Carmel Modern owner John Cromwell, whose gallery has become one of Carmel's most compelling destinations for contemporary art and creative conversation.
An accomplished abstract painter, Cromwell explores the relationships between color, geometry, texture, and perception. His paintings reward careful observation. Smooth, meticulously layered surfaces conceal earlier compositions beneath them, encouraging viewers to move closer and discover subtle histories hidden within each canvas. Every layer contributes to the whole, revealing that what first appears simple is, in fact, richly complex.
During our conversation, Cromwell shared that Carmel Modern was never envisioned as simply a gallery. It was created as a place where ideas could be exchanged and creative disciplines could intersect. Artists, architects, designers, musicians, collectors, and curious minds all find common ground within its walls, continuing the collaborative spirit that has defined Carmel's artistic community for generations.
For architects and interior designers, Cromwell's paintings offer a familiar dialogue. Just as exceptional spaces reveal themselves gradually through light, materiality, and movement, his work unfolds over time, inviting repeated discovery with every viewing.
Lucas Blok: The Art of Perception
Featured artist Lucas Blok has spent decades exploring one of painting's most fascinating subjects: perception itself.
Born in Gouda, the Netherlands, before later living in Canada and the United States, Blok developed an artistic language rooted not in representation, but in experience. His meticulously balanced compositions use luminous color and geometric precision to create paintings that appear to shift, pulse, and transform as viewers spend time with them. Rather than depicting the world around us, Blok's work invites us to experience it differently.
His paintings reside in the permanent collections of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Legion of Honor, the Crocker Museum of Art, the Triton Museum of Art, the Monterey Museum of Art, the Berkeley Art Museum, and numerous distinguished private and corporate collections.
In our interview, Blok explained that his paintings are not intended to deliver immediate answers. They are meant to slow the viewer down. As time passes, colors begin to vibrate against one another, new relationships emerge, and what initially appears still begins to feel alive. The experience becomes less about looking at a painting and more about participating in it.
For architects and interior designers, this philosophy feels remarkably familiar. Great spaces are not understood in a single glance. They unfold through movement, proportion, changing light, and the emotional response they evoke. Like architecture itself, Blok's paintings reveal their greatest depth to those willing to remain present.
Chef Nance Danner: Hospitality as an Art Form
The culinary experience for the evening will be presented by Chef Nance Danner, whose distinguished career spans decades of fine dining, private estates, luxury events, and intimate Chef's Table experiences throughout Monterey County and the Bay Area.
A graduate of formal culinary training and an active member of organizations including Les Toques Blanches, Les Dames d'Escoffier Monterey Chapter, Les Disciples d'Auguste Escoffier International, the American Culinary Federation, and the American Institute of Wine & Food, Danner has earned a reputation for combining impeccable technique with genuine warmth.
Yet during our conversation, credentials quickly gave way to philosophy.
For Danner, every menu begins not with ingredients, but with people.
She shared that she first considers how she wants guests to feel before deciding what they will eat. Seasonal ingredients become a language through which she tells the story of place, while every course is carefully composed to create rhythm throughout the evening. Her goal is never simply to prepare dinner. It is to create an experience people will remember long after the final course has been served.
Like architecture and interior design, her work is measured not only by precision, but by how deeply it connects with those who experience it.
I. Brand & Family Wines: The Landscape in Every Glass
Complementing the evening is a curated tasting from I. Brand & Family Wines, one of California's most respected voices in site-driven winemaking.
Founded by acclaimed winemaker Ian Brand, the winery is singularly devoted to expressing the diverse landscapes surrounding Monterey Bay. Rather than pursuing convention, Brand has spent his career uncovering overlooked vineyards whose coastal influence, mountain soils, and unique climates produce wines with unmistakable character.
His journey into wine followed an unconventional path that included international travel, service in the Peace Corps, and years of hands-on cellar work before establishing his own winery in Salinas. That independent spirit continues to define the winery today, producing wines that speak honestly of place while earning national recognition, including being named San Francisco Chronicle Winemaker of the Year.
Each wine served during the evening reflects the same principles that unite architecture, art, and cuisine: authenticity, craftsmanship, patience, and an unwavering respect for place.
A Celebration of Creative Stewardship
Every thriving community is shaped by those who dedicate themselves to creating something that will outlast them.
Artists inspire us to see differently.
Architects and interior designers shape the spaces where life unfolds.
Chefs create moments of connection around the table.
Winemakers preserve the character of the land in every bottle.
Together, their work forms the cultural fabric of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
This private evening at Carmel Modern brings these disciplines together in conversation, celebrating the extraordinary individuals whose mastery continues to enrich the community and create experiences that linger long after the evening has ended.
